U.S. Navy Ship Anchors in Tallinn

Although the USS Chattanooga was the first U.S. Navy warship to visit the newly independent Republic of Estonia in 1919, the USS Pittsburgh (CA-4) becomes the first ship to visit after the full establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and Estonia in 1922. As the ship entered Tallinn harbor, she fired a salute in honor of the Estonian flag while the Estonian Navy’s Lembit responded with a salute of fifteen shots. The ship’s crew, who was welcomed warmly in town, even got the chance to play a game of baseball against a local team.
