Peace Corps Volunteer Helps Solve Church Bell Mystery

Published by

In November 1994, Douglas Wells, a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer serving on Hiiumaa, helps to find a local church bell that had been buried for 50 years. The bell from Emmaste church, which was buried by a small group of villagers who hoped to prevent it from being melted for bullets by the Nazis during WWII and then lost to time, was finally rescued thanks to a friend of one of the villagers and Wells’ trusty metal detector. That Christmas, Estonian President Lennart Meri thanked Wells and declared that he was donating one month’s worth of salary to the bell’s restoration and return to the church.
