First Estonian Fulbright Scholar Travels to the U.S.

In 1987, while Estonia is still occupied by the Soviet Union, the first Estonian Fulbright Scholar, Ain-Elmar Kaasik, a professor from the Department of Neurology at the Estonian Academy of Sciences, travels to the University of Pennsylvania for his exchange program. The first U.S. Fulbright Scholar arrives in Estonia in 1992. The Fulbright Student Exchange program sends its first American student to Estonia in 1992 followed by it first Estonian student to the United States in 1993. The Fulbright Program, funded by the U.S. Government, awards grants to Americans and people of other countries to study, teach, lecture, and conduct research abroad.
