Estonian Diplomat Becomes Symbol of Hope and Freedom

Published by

Estonian Diplomat Ernst Jaakson serves as a consul then as Consul General to the Estonian Consulate in New York City during the 50 long years of Estonia’s illegal occupation by the Soviet Union. While he faithfully represents Estonia’s interests in the United States as a diplomat in exile, he becomes not only a legend in the diplomatic community, but a symbol of hope and freedom to his countrymen and women. When Estonia regains its independence in 1991, Mr. Jaakson is appointed Estonia’s ambassador to the United States and permanent representative to the United Nations.
