Years of Diplomatic Relations

The United States Embassy in Tallinn is proud to mark 100 years of U.S.-Estonia diplomatic relations in 2022! We’re celebrating by looking back at 100 moments that shaped the partnership between the United States and Estonia. Grouped into diplomatic milestones, security engagements, cultural events, and economic connections, these moments demonstrate the enduring friendship the United States and Estonia have shared over the past century.

The 1940 Welles Declaration when the United States refused to recognize the illegal Soviet occupation of the Baltic states. Swift Response, the largest joint military exercise held in 2021. American jazz musician Charles Lloyd’s groundbreaking 1967 visit to Tallinn. The first winners of the Estonian-American Innovation Award in 2011. These are just a few of the moments that form the basis of our partnership.

We encourage you to explore our timeline and hope you enjoy this unique glimpse into the U.S-Estonia relationship — 100 years strong!
